"Graduating": Preschool

Preschool is done. I'm sad about it, and I do believe Isla is too. She struggled through the ceremony, and, while she couldn't put it into words, I knew what she was feeling. Transition is hard.

At the end of the ceremony all the "Caterpillars" (the name of her preschool class) released butterflies as a symbol of their transition to kindergarten. It was so sweet.

Oh, and Hisae, her teacher, loved her shawl!

Celebrating: Our Baby is Five

Isla turned five! There is a part of me that cannot believe my little bean is "school age" and heading off to Kindergarten in the Fall. She has enjoyed preschool so much and made some sweet little friends. Fingers are crossed that she has as good an experience at the Fine Arts school as her siblings.

We had a Luau for her party, mainly because I wanted to use the leftover Hawaiian themed decorations, leis, and grass skirts from a party we had for her brother when she was a newborn! She asked for ice cream sundaes instead of cake, just like Faire did, and man, that makes it easy!

But the day after her party, when the house was finally quiet (we had an adult birthday party for her Dad later in the day/evening of her birthday - yes, we are ridiculous) I decided to make a vegan dessert that we could all enjoy. And we happened to have 5 ripe strawberries in the garden, ready to hold her candles. The chocolate cake recipe I often use happens to be vegan anyway, and I made chocolate avocado mousse for the icing. Delish.

We love parties, but having a quiet birthday cake together felt much more like "us".

Happy Birthday little Bean!

Celebrating: Maya is a Teenager!

We are celebrating my niece's 13th birthday today!

Her birth was the first I witnessed. Before I had even heard of the word "doula", let alone become one. What a long birth it was, too, only one birth in my doula career matched it! We set up shop at the hospital and it was a place of celebration. The whole family filled the waiting room, friends too. My mother-in-law brought us a picnic for the birthing room. I still cannot listen to this song without getting choked up. We listened to it all throughout that birth. (re: the link...I love that she is singing it at the Grammy's a few days before Maya's birth!)

My sister's pregnancy was not planned, and was...hmmm...controversial in my family, shall we say? But this babe was meant to be with us. We all raised this girl in her early years. She taught me how to be a Mama before I became one. She taught my sister a whole lot too. Dare I say she changed the course of her life.

Now Maya is an amazing big sister,  giving Brynn all the love and attention and care that we lavished on her all those years ago. She's such a great kid. I cannot believe she is a Teenager!!

at the Folk Fest with us this past summer...

I made her a cheesecake. The mother of all cheesecakes, by way of The Barefoot Contessa. That woman knows her way around a dessert! 2 1/2 pounds of cream cheese, a boatload of organic sugar and eggs,  and frozen raspberries from our garden. And love, of course. She deserves it.

We love you, Maya Papaya!

Celebrating: Valentine Simplicity

We're having dinner in the dining room tonight, ooh lala...

I tried to think of something "sexy" to do while with our children on Valentine's Day...it came to me suddenly...eat Greek, of course!

Greek food is sexy to me.
(Maybe because lamb that is braised for hours, then served with lemon roasted potatoes and homemade tzatziki just makes us all moan with love and happiness?)

Enjoy this Happy Heart Day.

Celebrating: A Decade!

A Party happened here.

It involved a disco ball.

And many giggling girls.

Faire turned TEN. This time, I really tried to Let Go. I went with the detailed list she started a month ago, with all the ideas she had for the party. I left my Martha-Stewart/Earthy-Mama meddling out of it. I bit my lip, and did as she asked, and...

It totally worked.

Hmm, my ten year old seems to have a good idea what other girls her age would like to do...go figure.

We had a dance party in the evening, so there was no involved food prep, just a few snacks she asked for that were fairly easy to put together (and fairly healthy to boot!), and she didn't want cake, only ice cream sundaes, so once I snuck in some organic, homemade topping choices (made the day before), I was happy and she was happy.

Perhaps I should try to remember this next year.
